Oliver Dowden, Tory MP for Hertsmere, resigns as Conservative Party chairman

Following the biggest majority ever overturned in a by-election as seen last night in Tiverton and Honiton, the Tory Blue wall is now crumbling. Tories now fear losing their seats in the next General Election, and are distancing themselves from Boris Johnson, as seen this morning in Oliver Dowden's decision to step down as Chair of the Conservative Party.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Hertsmere, Emma Matanle said:

"Dowden's decision to resign this morning, finally distancing himself from Johnson, is 'too little, too late'. Just weeks ago, he backed Johnson in the leadership confidence vote. He is now only thinking about his own seat, fearful that he will lose it when we go to the ballot box at the next General Election. And rightly so! The public is sick of Boris Johnson's lies and law-breaking and it's time for Conservative MPs to finally do the right thing and sack him".

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

"The Liberal Democrats have made political history with this stunning win. It is the biggest by-election victory our country has ever seen. This should be a wake-up call for all those Conservative MPs propping up Boris Johnson. They cannot afford to ignore this result".
